Mathew Nuqingaq
Mathew Nuqingaq is a silversmith, metal artist and sculptor, drum dancer, photographer and educator from Iqaluit, Nunavut. He is also the owner of the Aayuraa Studio in Iqaluit, which he founded as a jewelry workshop.
Nuqingaq taught the jewelry course at Nunavut Arctic College before opening his own studio where he makes his own creations and welcomes visiting artists to work at one of the ‘benches.’ He focuses on how to use non-traditional materials (i.e. silver, copper) to produce Inuit sculpture and jewelry. His designs include Inuit tools, arctic animals and draw on popular figures from Inuit stories.
Nuqingaq is one of six artists that created the ceremonial mace for the commencement of the Nunavut government in 1999. He is also an accomplished performer who receives annual invitations to international festivals and celebrations. Co-founder and past chair of Nunavut Arts and Crafts Association, Nuqingaq also sat on the Inuit Art Foundation Board of Directors for over 20 years.
