The Hahku Project was formed by community leaders and Leo Cerda, and environmental activist and member of the Kichwa Nation, as a way to provide income for people in these areas that are hard hit by oil exploitation. Hahku’s goal is to create sustainable sources of income for indigenous people from the Amazon region so we can have an alternative to the extractive and destructive industries of oil, mining, lumber, and beef. The first project to be undertaken is Hahku Amazon Design.

Hakhu Amazon Design
I grew up in an indigenous community, where there was plenty of creativity and the markets were always full of new handmade products. That influenced me to have a perspective on innovation and creativity with the thread of the Andean cosmovision.
Hakhu Amazon Design is an online platform to sell the products of indigenous women artisans across the Ecuadorian Amazon. The money received from the products will support further projects within a community-based initiative format, such as providing workshops on how to continue these traditional art forms and designs in order to develop quality products and keep cultural knowledge from disappearing.
The indigenous women of our community are the mainstay of our brand. We all work together to achieve economic solvency and long term development. Our creativity comes from our environment, we live and coexist with nature, which helps us to understand the care of our territories. We express all this through the creation of Hakhu garments.
