Whakapapa (genealogy) allows us to trace back our ancestral line over many generations and understand where we come from. I have always been taught to live with the understanding that can be described through whakatauki (proverbs) like ‘Ko te awa ko au, ko au ko te awa’ (The river is me and I am the river). It is a connection that allows me to acknowledge who and where I come from no matter where I am in the world. As a weaver it is important to acknowledge these connections to my whakapapa. I use contemporary product and colours to join traditional practice and modern day perspective. I am able to enhance the significance of my own connection to my work. As the stories of the taonga (treasures) become more apparent, there is a spiritual manifestation where the taonga almost weaves itself and my hands merely become the vehicle/tool to create it.
